End of an awesome week working with @adidastokyo for Sports x Environmental Impact, through their #RunForTheOceans campaign 🏃♀️🏃🏻♂️ 🌎
In many countries around the world, people got involved in #Plogging (jogging + picking up litter) and other activities to raise awareness and take action on #oceanpollution and waste.
We’re so happy to be able to support the movement here in #Japan🇯🇵 by helping with Plogging across #Tokyo 🙂
After each session, we set aside time for runners to share & discuss; what kind of rubbish they found, why people #litter and how we can reduce consumption in our daily lives.
Lots of interesting comments came out; surprise at how much litter was #plastic and the number of cigarette butts on the ground, people committing to reduce #singleuseplastics in their lives and carry their own bottle, etc. Some people even said they would go Plogging on the regular 😀
All in all, a really fun and meaningful chance to do some good for the planet, body and soul 💪

When I graduated university, I had literally no idea what I was going to do with my life (I was totally lost 😨). Now, 8 years on, I find it hard to believe that I’ve made #SocialImpact my career - as an #AidWorker, running my own #nonprofit, working for a #socialenterprise, and now as a #DisasterRiskReduction consultant for an intergovernmental body. People often ask me how I got into this stuff (bit of a niche area🤣) and I always tell them that it started through #volunteering in areas hit by the Great East Japan Tsunami 🇯🇵 (Photos are from back then, when I was 22! 😲 ) Those experiences totally transformed my perspective and life trajectory, and took me in a direction I never expected... People often ask if I know of any similar opportunities - so I decided to put pen to paper and wrote a guide to #volunteer, #philanthropy and social impact opportunities in #japan🇯🇵 (link in bio). Week 1 in #Mozambique, one of my favourite places 🇲🇿 Despite a few challenges (trucks breaking down, lack of phone signal, etc) we managed to coordinate an emergency food distribution for 500+ households in the remote #Nyamatchindo area that was hit hard by #CycloneIdai (most of the work was done by our local partner #Kulima, to be clear!) The community members said that this was the first assistance to reach them since the hurricane struck in mid-March. Across the country, hundreds of thousands of acres of crops were wiped out, leading to serious concerns around food and hunger.
In the next few days, we’ll be following up with a distribution of seeds and programs to support farmers to promote long-term food security.

One of my favourite quotes (and I'm not really a quote guy) is: '“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” In May 2017, @konojpng, @marikoolivia & I launched #SocialInnovationJapan. Looking back, we had really no idea if it would work and only a vague idea of where we were going - but we did it anyway.
2 years on, it's really humbling to think that we've brought together over 1000 people to converge around some of today's biggest social and environmental issues (#SDGs), and have created this community of passionate, driven people committed to building a better future.
I've met some of the most wonderful people, people I'm honestly honoured to call my friends, and am genuinely so grateful for all the great things that have happened through these new encounters.
Needless to say, NONE of this would have been remotely possible without the support of the dozens of #volunteers, #interns, advisors, sponsors and supporters - so I want to take this opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to each and every single person who has been a part of this.
Going forward, we have some exciting things coming up - we'll be launching a new Podcast series soon and will also be scaling up our online content, as well as continuing our offline events and projects.
