Another day in Beira, #Mozambique - 1 month has passed since #CycloneIdai hit. Spent the day assessing areas affected near the city of Beira, including several camps. We looked into water, food, and #sanitation issues with local leaders to try and understand where the gaps are and how they can be met. Current situation, according to #UnitedNations OCHA: - 1.85 million people are in need - Approx 73,000 people are displaced across 70 camps - 239,000 homes destroyed - 1 million people assisted with food, but still serious concerns over #FoodSecurity (crops were devastated by floods and the window to plant crops is closing within the next month) - Several areas are inaccessible and have reportedly not been reached at all. - Almost 5,000 cases of #cholera reported - Malaria is on the rise as floodwaters recede #DisasterRelief #HumanitarianAid #AidWork #DisasterResponse #Humanitarian #AidWorker #PeaceBoat

Landed in #Mozambique 🇲🇿 for #CycloneIdai emergency response. Heading to the heavily impacted town of #Beira today to start conducting a needs assessment. Despite little international news coverage, the @unitednations has described it as "one of the deadliest storms on record in the southern hemisphere". More than 2 million people, 1.85 million of whom are in Mozambique, were affected. Such an honour to be moderator for this panel of industry leaders at the UN @worldfoodprogramme (#WFP) Innovation Accelerator In #Tokyo 🙏 Hearing insights from Robert Opp (Director of #Innovation, WFP), Haruna Tanaka (Chief Executive Innovation Office #Rakuten), Satoshi Akita (CEO, #Wassha Inc) and Yuki Ono (Head of Overseas Expansion Team, #Deloitte Tohmatsu Venture Support) taught me so much about technology and innovation, and remphasised the need for partnerships to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). 821 million people are suffering from #hunger today, and global hunger is actually on the rise, despite many advances in society. On top of that, there’s a 2.5 trillion USD investment gap that needs to be met annually for us to achieve the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. That means something has to change drastically for us to achieve #ZeroHunger and the other SDGs by 2030. Over 9 days, I had the most invigorating & rewarding time working with passionate people to create solutions to real-world problems. Spring time = #Plogging season🌲 Big shout out to everyone who joined us this weekend (the youngest plogger was 3 years old!) 🙏 Really enjoyed the post-running discussions around waste, pollution and the #environment 👏 Running around hunting for litter is a powerful way to explore and rethink the way we consume and dispose of everyday products. Some ploggers were surprised at just how much of the litter was plastic and discussed the importance of reducing #consumption to tackle the problem at the source.
